DOUBLE DRAGONS - SELF TITLED

Double Dragons are a two piece band from I don't know where. I don't even know who they are. This album came out a few years ago, I haven't heard anything since, so I assume it was a 'one and done' type deal. A drummer and guitarist, they play instrumental math-rock. Purty good.

Karate - Cancel/Sing and Misfits - Cough/Cool 7"

KARATE - In 2005 Karate announced their demise, quietly closing the door on a 12-year run that included 6 studio albums and almost 700 performances in 20 countries. The band was made up of Geoff Farina (vocals, guitar), Gavin McCarthy (drums), and Jeff Goddard (bass). There's not much I can say to bring this amazing band the ultimate justice they deserve... except maybe "They fucking rule." A blend between rock, jazz, and sometimes even psychedelic, these guys keep it tight, and original. Geoff's lyrics are honest and thoughtful, wonderfully strung together and oh-so-fitting for this music. (In an earlier post I mentioned about lyrics not always being great, but here, they are.) Anyways, enough blabbering, please check out this EP, hopefully you'll enjoy.

MISFITS COUGH/COOL 7"
Now, I know what you're thinking, "Ew, the effin' Misfits?" But wait, this very first release of theirs is very much different from anything else they've done. Only two songs, it clocks in at about 3 minutes. I'm done typing for now so just try it and hear what could've been a great sound for them.

Giraffes? Giraffes! - Live on KZSC

GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! - Hailing from Santa Cruz, California, Giraffes? Giraffes! is made up of Joseph Andreoli (guitar, loops, effects) and Kenneth Topham (drums, percussion, glockenspiel, bells, pots and pans). These guys do an excellent job of pumping out fresh, catchy, and technical songs. Joseph utilizes tapping and loops to make structured and brilliant music, and at the same time Kenneth whirls and swirls us around with his eclectic and speedy drum skills. They have two other releases out there, but I wanted to share this one because not only is it live, but they do a damn great job. There is no singing, but I find it is not needed here, or very rarely anywhere else.

The Dreamers - O'o

THE DREAMERS - This is a project of John Zorn, he composes the music for this, but doesn't actually play in it. It's got Cyro Baptista on percussion, Joey Baron on drums, Trevor Dunn on bass, Marc Ribot on guitar, Jamie Saft on piano and organ, and Kenny Wollesen on vibraphone. I had the pleasure of seeing this album performed in NYC, and boy, it was amazing (I really wish this studio album was just as great, but sadly, it isn't. Still great though.). Upbeat jazzy tones meander and morph into something that isn't quite jazz, but isn't not jazz. Listen for yourself, relaxing and fulfilling.

High Wolf - Ascension

HIGH WOLF - I don't know too much about the man behind this wonderfulness, but I think he's French. Anywho, his music is very relaxing, and is best listened to through headphones (and high if that's yer thang). I don't want to use the word 'drone,' because it doesn't really drone at all. An atmospheric floating of guitar, mild percussion, and keyboards takes listeners on a vacation of sorts... a vacation to a small (and perhaps haunted) island, full of psychedelic warmth and mystical wonder. All of his releases are superb, but I figured I'd share his newest endeavor with you all... please enjoy this at least half as much as I do.

USAISAMONSTER - Sunset at the End of the Industrial Age

USAISAMONSTER (pronounced “USA is a Monster”) was a two piece noise rock band based in the Bed-Stuy area of Brooklyn. They were closely related to Providence, RI’s Fort Thunder and Olneyville. The band consists of Tom Hohmann (drums, keyboards, and vocals) and Colin Langenus (guitar and vocals).

This is only one of the handful of albums these guys have put out, and I must say, it's a damn good one. If you enjoy odd time shifts, proggish-noise-rock, and native americans, then it would be a good life move to check this, and their other albums out. Unfortunetely these guys are no longer together, and I haven't heard any news on other projects or anything.

My friends and I...

Have a band of sorts... sometimes two men, sometimes three, four. Anyways, here's three albums, recorded with my cellphone, in a basement. Sorry for the lame quality, but you can hear a good amount of what's going on. They are all improvisational jams, and may not make sense all of the time, but hey, what does? Enjoy!
